Beschreibung
Jeroboam stands before a raised altar crowned with a golden calf, lifting his hands in ritual devotion while musicians and gathered Israelites look on. Offerings of fruit, grain, and a sacrificial animal surround the base, emphasizing the newly invented worship center established apart from Jerusalem. The scene depicts the turning point in 1 Kings 12, when Jeroboam, king over the northern tribes, feared that Israel’s pilgrimages to the temple would return their loyalty to the house of David. He made golden calves and declared, “Behold your gods, O Israel,” setting one in Bethel and another in Dan. The artwork captures the tragedy of political fear becoming religious corruption: worship is redirected from the Lord’s appointed temple to a visible idol, and convenience replaces covenant obedience. This image is suited for teaching on idolatry, divided kingdom history, false worship, leadership failure, and the spiritual consequences of compromise.
